(set: $participant to (random: 10000000, 99999999)) <div style="width:640px;padding:10px;min-height:800px">Welcome to the website for this project. Before you can be a participant in this study, there are a few things to get through. The first thing is to read through the information letter for this study. This letter tells you what the study is about and what kinds of things you'll be asked to do (and what you won't be asked to do). After you've read through that, there's a consent form for you to sign. It will ask for your name and email address so we can keep in touch and invite you to participate in the rest of the stages of the study. After that there is a survey about global environmental issues, focussing on global warming. The information you provide in the consent form will be saved separately from your answers to the survey. This helps to remove any bias when we're analysing the results of the survey, and it also helps to protect your privacy as a participant. A code number will be generated for you that you should see on both forms. This number will be used for the rest of the study. [[Information Letter<-Click here to read the information letter...]]</div><div style="width:640px;padding:10px;min-height:800px">''Information about the study'' We invite you to participate in a research study exploring whether playing a planet simulation game might influence perception of global environmental issues. This study is part of my PhD Degree in Environmental Science, supervised by Dr Catherine Baudains at Murdoch University ''Nature and Purpose of the Study'' Communities around the world are faced with major environmental issues that affect everyone’s lives, but people are often unsure about what’s really going on, which government policies to support or what steps they can take themselves to improve things. Many researchers are studying ways to involve the public more in these issues to foster a dialogue between communities, governments and experts so they can tackle them together. Playing games is one way to share information and allow people to participate in problem solving activities. This study investigates if participants’ thought processes about complex global problems are influenced by playing a planet simulation game. The aim is to find out whether this type of game is good at improving the dialogue around these issues. If you consent to take part in this research study, it is important that you understand the purpose of the study and the tasks you will be asked to complete. Please make sure that you ask any questions you may have, and that all your questions have been answered to your satisfaction before you agree to participate. ''What the Study will Involve'' If you decide to participate in this study, you will be asked to: * Complete an online questionnaire that asks about your feelings and attitudes towards some complex issues on a local and global scale. This will take approximately half an hour to 45 minutes. * To volunteer for a workshop in which you will perform a mental model mapping exercise (taking around 20 minutes), play a planet simulation game for 60-90 minutes, complete a quick questionnaire about the game (about 5 minutes), and complete the mental model mapping exercise a second time. Not all the participants in the survey will be invited to attend the workshops. * Complete the online questionnaire a second time, around 3-6 months after completing it the first time. People who haven’t attended the workshops will still be asked to complete the questionnaire again. A small number of workshop participants will be asked to have their game play sessions recorded, and to speak their thoughts aloud as they play the game. Their recorded thoughts will be transcribed and they will be asked to read the transcripts later and confirm that they are an accurate record of the session. They will not appear on the video of the game session, as it will only be a recording of their computer desktop. ''Voluntary Participation and Withdrawal from the Study'' Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You may withdraw at any time without discrimination or prejudice. All information is treated as confidential and no names or other details that might identify you will be used in any publication arising from the research. If you withdraw, all information you have provided will be destroyed. ''Benefits of the Study'' It is possible that there may be no direct benefit to you from participation in this study, however you may find that you have a greater appreciation for environmental issues facing your community and the world, and you might have a better idea of what you can do about them. You might also enjoy playing the planet simulation game. While there is no guarantee that you will personally benefit, the knowledge gained from your participation may help others in the future, by making sure that efforts to communicate environmental issues with the community are better tailored to the audiences they want to reach. ''Possible Risks'' There are no specific risks anticipated with participation in this. However, you may withdraw your participation at any time if you choose to do so. ''Reimbursement'' Everyone who completes the online questionnaire and submits it to us will go into a draw for 5 double passes to Hoyts cinemas, valued at $26 per pair of tickets. If you have any questions about this project please feel free to contact either myself, Lisa Evans on ph. 08 9360 2921 or my supervisor, Dr Catherine Baudains, on ph. 08 9360 6393. My supervisor and I are happy to discuss with you any concerns you may have about this study. Once we have analysed the information from this study we will email a summary of our findings. You can expect to receive this feedback from 12 months after the beginning of the study. If you are willing to consent to participation in this study, please complete the Consent Form. Thank you for your assistance with this research project. [[Click to continue to the consent form...]]</div> <div style="width:640px;padding:10px;min-height:800px">Thank you for continuing this far! You now have a code number for this study, which is $participant. This number should be pre-loaded into the form below. If you wish, you may note this down for your own reference, as it will be used throughout all stages of the study. *Please note that if you refresh this page in your browser, your code number will change. If that happens and you've already submitted a consent form, you will have to submit it again.* Please read through this consent form (it may take a few seconds to load), and if you agree to continue to the questionnaire, fill out your details and click to submit the form. --- <div id="wufoo-rxxfcjr1lhei43"> Fill out my <a href="http://lisape.wufoo.com/forms/rxxfcjr1lhei43">online form</a>. </div> (set: $consent_script to "<script type=\"text/javascript\">var rxxfcjr1lhei43;!function(e,t){var a=e.createElement(t),o={userName:\"lisape\",formHash:\"rxxfcjr1lhei43\",autoResize:!0,height:\"234\",defaultValues:\"field1=" + (text: $participant) + "\",async:!0,header:\"show\"};a.src=(\"https:\"==e.location.protocol?\"https://\":\"http://\")+\"wufoo.com/scripts/embed/form.js\",a.onload=a.onreadystatechange=function(){var e=this.readyState;if(!e||\"complete\"==e||\"loaded\"==e)try{rxxfcjr1lhei43=new WufooForm,rxxfcjr1lhei43.initialize(o),rxxfcjr1lhei43.display()}catch(t){}};var r=e.getElementsByTagName(t)[0],s=r.parentNode;s.insertBefore(a,r)}(document,\"script\");</script>") $consent_script --- Please ensure that you have submitted the consent form before continuing.
